Treatment of Lyme Disease.

Treatment is based on the application of antibiotics. For adults, administration of doxycycline is recommended. For children, mainly beta-lactam antibiotics are prescribed. For the treatment of advanced forms, cephalosporins or G-penicillin are recommended. Long-term usage of antibiotics in persistent forms of Lyme disease has only limited effect [114].

First effort to design vaccine against the Lyme disease followed shortly after the discovery of Borrelia as the etiological agent causing this disease. First experiments demonstrated the immunogenicity of bacterial whole cell lysates. Later, specific proteins were identified to be recognized by the host immune system [115].
